Let's talk about books, baby!

Yo yo yiggity yo!

Since I'm home a lot and have a good amount of time on my hands, I've decided to take up reading again. I REALLY love to read, and it's one of those things that when I'm in the mood, I motor through like 5 books in a short amount of time and then don't read again for like 6 months.

BUT, I've decided, since I'm home w/ an infant all day long, I should try to read at least a book a month to keep my brain sharp.

I just finished "The Book Theif" by Markus Zusak. Great book! I couldn't put it down! Highly recommend! My imagination went wild with this book. I don't think I've ever been able to see characters or places soo vividly in my mind's eye w/ a book before. (Aside from books I've read that've turned into movies, like Twilight or the HP's) But, I would lay awake in bed at night thinking of Leisel (main character) and Rudy (her best friend) playing on Himmel Street. I give it two thumbs up!

Currently, I'm reading a book called "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card. It's kind of a children's sci fi, but pretty entertaining. I'm not finished w/ it yet, but the premise is kind of cool. The "best of the best" kids are taken away from their families to go to "space camp" to train to beat "buggers" who are the humans enemies. Ender, the main character is only 6 when he's taken away to camp. He excels at all of the "space training games" despite being so young....and so far, that's pretty much all I know about it :) I'll let you know what I rate it once I'm done. But, so far, it's entertaining.

I'm also reading a lot of Dr. Seuss lately. "The Cat in the Hat" & "Oh, the Places You Will Go" happen to be my favies so far. :)

I have a whole list of books I'd love to read. I'm interested in this series called "The Hunger Games", LOOK IT UP! They sound really weird/cool. I'd like to read "The Girl w/ the Dragon Tattoo" series, "I Am Messenger" which is another book by Markus Zusak, and a few others.

So ladies...tell me, what are you reading or what do you plan to read?

  1. I read the Messenger, it's pretty good, but not as good as the book thief. I am finishing up reading the Glass Castle and am loving it. It is a memoir from a New York City author about growing up with a crazy, nomadic family and how they got to the point that now all children are well and successful living in NYC and the parents have opted to be homeless.
Another really good one is The Help. I went through that pretty quickly last spring. Also, anything by Wally Lamb: I Know This Much is True, She's Come Undone.

  2. I have never been much of a reader. I would get distracted and have to re-read paragraphs over and over cause I don't remember what I read... kind of thing. About the time I quit school I also discovered Francine Rivers. For the first time I understood what it is like to get lost in a book, spending hours and hours just reading. I haven't branched too far out from Francine but am looking to do lots of reading this winter so all these recommendations are great.
Mer, what would you recommend for me knowing I enjoy River's writing.
Kar, the Glass Castle sounds like a great one to read since crazy nomadic family might be in my future!
I am currently reading a book Everybody's Normal Till You Get to Know Them. Suz and I are tagging teaming this read together. It takes a deeper look into the idea of community. I don't like summarizing so I will leave it at that. It has been a great read for me. Having been a Christian most of my life, I love seeing and hearing different insight into something I've known for so long.
Kevin and I haven't started them yet but our friends let us borrow two of their books. Kevin's to read She Comes First, and I am to read He Comes Next. I will let you know how they read.

    Thanks for the post Mer!
